About KAWR

Kenya Association of Waste Recyclers(KAWR) is a business membership organization for the private sector industry involved in the recovery of materials from waste. This includes, but  not limited to, retrieval of materials from waste, repair, refurbishment, recycling, remanufacturing, composting, power generation, or any other initiative aimed at extracting value from material that would otherwise have been discarded as waste. KAWR was registered in 2017 under section 10 of the Societies Act, Kenya.

The Ten R’s of Circular Economy

KAWR is a national network championing waste management, recycling, and circular economy solutions.  At KAWR, we live by the principles that keep Kenya clean, green, and thriving. In pursuit of this mandate, the Association advocates for the following principles:

Refuse

We advocate for rejecting unnecessary, single-use, and non-recyclable materials—driving demand toward sustainable alternatives.

Rethink

We challenge conventional consumption patterns by encouraging smarter product design, sustainable business models, and more efficient use of resources across value chains.

Reduce

We work to minimize waste at the source by promoting responsible consumption, efficient production, and mindful resource use—ensuring less waste reaches landfills.

Reuse

We promote extending the life of everyday items by encouraging creative repurposing, repair, and support for local second-hand markets.

Repair

We support the maintenance and fixing of products to extend their lifespan, reduce waste generation, and create green jobs in repair ecosystems.

Refurbish

We promote restoring used products to good working condition, particularly in sectors like electronics and furniture, enabling them to re-enter the market.

Remanufacture

We encourage rebuilding products using recovered components to meet original performance standards, reducing the need for virgin materials.

Repurpose

We support transforming waste materials or products into new uses that differ from their original purpose, unlocking additional value streams.

Recycle

We support transforming waste materials or products into new uses that differ from their original purpose, unlocking additional value streams.

Recover

Where reuse or recycling is not feasible, we promote recovery of energy or materials from waste in an environmentally responsible manner.
