Economic opportunities in recycling

What is Recycling?
Recycling is the process of recovering valuable materials from the waste stream and giving them a new purpose. Instead of being discarded in dumpsites, these rescued materials can be reused, processed into alternative raw materials, or transformed into new products.

Existing Opportunities

As recycling continues to evolve in the country, new and unique opportunities are emerging across different material streams. Some of the major waste streams that hold significant value include:

  • Plastics (PET, HDPE, PP, LDPE)
  • Waste paper
  • Scrap metal (copper, aluminium, steel, cast iron, etc.)
  • Textile waste and used oil
  • Rubber (e.g., used tyres)
  • Bones (for crushing into bone meal)
  • Organic waste (composting into organic fertilizer)
  • Food waste (collection for use as animal feed)

These opportunities not only create value but also contribute to building a sustainable circular economy.

Sample products made from recycled materials and re-use:

Polyethylene-sawdust composites

Plastic-sand paving blocks

Metal-glass bracelets

Candle holders from cut-bottles
